The rescue of a seriously injured mountaineer from the almost 2,200 meter high Niederen Ochsenkogel near Hallstatt (Upper Austria) placed extreme demands on the emergency services on Monday evening. On the one hand, the victim was lying on a rock edge, threatening to fall, on the other hand, the weather caused problems.
The man fell 20 meters from the top and injured his ankle so badly that he could no longer walk. The mountain rescue service in Hallstatt was therefore alerted shortly before 9 p.m. First, a helicopter had to rescue the climber who was lying on a cliff. However, an approaching thunderstorm forced the helicopter to turn around again. In any case, when the weather calmed down a bit, it was possible to drop off an ambulance and a paramedic nearby, who took the injured person out of harm’s way and began to treat the pain. However, there was no question of an air rescue because the weather conditions deteriorated again.
Hours of storage
Seven mountain rescuers from the valley, the innkeeper from the Wiesberghaus and an alpinist from the Simonyhütte went on foot to the injured man. They finally reached the man around 1:30am and joined forces to pull him to the top, where – after the storm had subsided – a rescue helicopter was finally able to land at 4am. The patient was flown to the hospital in Bad Ischl, for the mountain rescuers the demanding night ended around 6.30 am with their return to the valley.
