Lake Garda in Italy is a popular travel destination – but holidaymakers cannot currently go swimming everywhere. On the northwestern coast of the lake in the municipality of Limone, access to the beach is closed again this year.
In the Nature Reserve Val di Gola, visitors are not allowed to enter the banking area in October, such as the local media report. Environmental authorities had recommended the blocking not to disturb the sensitive ecosystem. In the area of approximately 20,000 square meters, not only do baths are prohibited, but no ships are allowed to drive.
If you do not keep up, you must expect fines from 50 to 300 euros. However, the municipality of Limone emphasizes that it is not the penalties, but the protection of the lake is in the foreground.
The lock is a protective measure
Endangered fish are protected with the lock of the beach. In particular, it is about the small freshwater fish Ukelei, which used to be widespread in Lake Garda and are now considered threatened. The Ukelei usually plans near the coast – this makes them vulnerable to disruptions of swimmers or boats.
But other fish species, birds and plants also benefit from the fact that you have a refuge where there are no swimmers.
