In the group of 20 leading industrialized and emerging countries, there is disagreement about whether Russia should be excluded from international consultations because of the attack on Ukraine. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called for a boycott. Indonesia, the host of this year’s G20 meetings, contradicted this: Indonesia cannot exclude or invite any G20 member, including Russia, a government representative in Jakarta said.
It is up to a country to decide whether to participate. According to previous information, Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to participate in the G20 summit in Bali this year. Russia has the backing of China to stay in the group.
Meeting in Washington
Since the global financial crisis of 2008, important international issues have been discussed in the context of the G20 – most recently, for example, the fight against the corona pandemic and the resulting significant increase in debt. Traditionally, G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meet in April on the sidelines of the IMF’s spring meeting in Washington. This is scheduled for the week after Easter.
US to boycott meetings
Yellen told US lawmakers on Wednesday that the US would boycott some G20 meetings if Russians showed up there. The US government has just announced further sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. A Yellen spokesperson said their statements related to the G20 meeting in Washington in April, which will be hosted locally and virtually.
Western countries have recently increasingly taken advantage of the G7 group of leading industrialized nations – which includes the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and Britain. Here the interests are much closer together.
