The well-known Italian confectionery entrepreneur Alberto Balocco (56) was killed on Saturday in a storm in the northern Italian Alps. The boss of the company that produces the famous Panettone Christmas cake was cycling with a friend when the two were caught in a thunderstorm at an altitude of 2,381 meters. A lightning strike killed the men.
As reported by Italian media, the two mountain bike fans were crossing the Assietta mountain road in the Piedmont region when it started to rain. Far and wide there was no way to get to safety with the e-bikes. A hiker later found the lifeless bodies of the two men. There was no rescue for the two.
Alberto Balocco (see photo above) ran the family business of the same name in the third generation. The deceased leaves behind a wife and three children. Particularly tragic: Alberto’s father Aldo died a few weeks ago at the age of 91. He is considered the inventor of the well-known almond panettone “Mandorlato”.
