After wild debates – teenagers shot: police take stance

Date:

Multiple bullet holes in the stolen van, two projectiles hit a 14-year-old suspect. Last Friday’s spectacular chase in the Tyrolean lowlands, which eventually led to gunfire in St. Johann (Kitzbüheler district), still sparks heated debates. Not least because the lawyer for the injured boy recently criticized the police’s actions. On Tuesday afternoon, the Tyrolean police leadership took the floor and took a position.

The State Police Directorate of Tyrol has the highest understanding of the current legitimate discussions and questions in the public debate. However, we cannot understand it when the involved police officers, the detectives and the police in general are exposed to massive insults, contempt and open prejudice on social media (and sometimes in personal emails as well).

“Last class terms”
The police also do not understand the lawyer’s various statements for the injured youth. Terms like “Killer Commando” are “top” and “rejected in the strongest possible terms.” The presumption of innocence also applies to police officers, as it does to any other citizen, until proven otherwise.

Tyrolean police officers not only do an excellent job every day, but also have to take into account that they are exposed to life-threatening situations in every operation. The police therefore invest a great deal of effort and resources in training and operational training, in which the behavior in dangerous situations is trained in detail.

Case is “completely clarified”
It is emphasized again that the use of weapons by the two police officers “is currently the subject of criminal investigation by the Carinthische Staatsrecherche, which is independent of the LPD Tirol and is led by the Innsbruck prosecutor’s office, and is being fully clarified.”

The director of the Tyrol State Police, Edelbert Kohler, said: “It is a very stressful situation for everyone involved. I wish the colleagues affected a lot of strength in coping with this exceptional psychological situation and wish the injured young man a speedy recovery as well. and good recovery.”

Chase more than 30 kilometers
The action on the tracks in the station area in St. Johann was preceded by a wild chase from Wörgl (Kufstein district). There, three boys had fled during a driver and vehicle check with the car that had apparently been stolen two days earlier. The panel van then overspeeded on Loferer Straße in the direction of St. Johann and performed a number of risky overtaking maneuvers. In the vicinity of Going, according to the director, the driver even drove towards a roadblock or police car, but steered at the last minute and eventually came back on the road via a slope.

The other two youths – a 14-year-old Austrian and a Russian (13) – were arrested nearby by the Cobra task force. The police in Wörgl arrested two other 13-year-olds. Apparently they had left the vehicle there for the check attempt.
