The average price of electricity for regulated tariff customers linked to the wholesale market of the Spanish state will end in August with a record since the “Iberian exception” was introduced on June 15, and the month will have been the most expensive in history. It rose by 3.69% from today, Tuesday, to 476.39 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), according to preliminary data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.

The previous maximum since the entry into force of the measure was registered today, Tuesday, at 459.4 euros/MWh.

This Wednesday’s 476.39 euros/MWh would be the second highest price in history for regulated tariff customers linked to the wholesale market, only behind the record 544.98 euros/MWh recorded on March 8, before the entry into force of the “gasoline cap”.

The price increase is being driven by the price of natural gas, which is at record levels. On the one hand, Gazprom has announced that it will shut down gas supplies to Germany for three days from August 31. On the other hand, French energy supply company Engie has reported that Gazprom has reduced supply due to disagreements between the parties in the application of some contracts.

In this way, August says goodbye as the month with the most expensive electricitywith an average price of 300 euros/MWh on the Spanish wholesale market, which in turn has caused the consumer’s bill.

The 300.14 euros/MWh on average registered in August they exceed the previous historical maximum of 283.3 euros/MWh, which was registered in March last year, shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the rest of Europe, electricity market prices will also be particularly high for this Wednesday. In France it will be more than 650 euros/MWh, while in Germany it will be more than 600 euros/MWh. In Belgium they will be more than 516 euros/MWh, in the Netherlands 534 and in Austria and Switzerland almost 700.
