It is getting tight: shortly before school starts, 60 primary school classes in Vienna are without teachers. Solutions are still being sought. The director of education now insures all classes of a teacher – with what quality is the question.
Even before the holidays, the teachers’ union warned of a teacher shortage in the autumn. Shortly before the school starts, the seriousness of the situation becomes clear: an insider reports to the “Krone” that 60 primary school teachers will be missing when the school starts. And it could get worse as Lower Austria and Burgenland are again trying to strip teachers this week.
It needs internal solutions
So is it true that six days before school starts, dozens of classes in Vienna don’t have a tour? “We still need classroom management for about 55 of our 6,500 primary school classes,” confirms education director Heinrich Himmer when asked by “Krone”, “that always lasts almost until the last day.” Wednesday to clarify which internal solutions can be found.
For example, the hours of part-time employees can be increased, two part-time teachers can lead a class or team teachers can be deployed. The rest is ordered externally, for example by students.
700 primary school teachers newly hired
The city has already hired 700 primary school teachers this summer. However, according to the union, an average of 350 teachers retire every six months – a zero-sum game.
Do entire classes have to wait in vain for a teacher on Mondays? “I guarantee that no child will be sent home and that all lessons will start under supervision,” says Himmer.
