Two hikers from the Carinthian district of Villach-Land, a 69-year-old man and his 82-year-old friend, took the cable car to the mountain station of the Ankogelbahn around 10 a.m. on Monday. On the descent to the valley, the two wanted to collect blackberries.
“After a short time, the two hikers left the marked path,” the police said. “They wanted to try their luck in the field looking for blackberries.” But the terrain became steeper and more impassable. Therefore, the 69-year-old and his acquaintance decided to split up so that the man could find a safe way. He finally made the descent through the steep, rocky terrain into the valley and finally got the rescue chain going at 7pm.
Search operation with police helicopter
“Of course, the 69-year-old did not know where to find his companion,” the officials explain. That is why the Spittal Alpine Task Force together with the Mallnitz Mountain Rescue Service launched a search. The “Libelle” police helicopter provided support from above, which then, during a search flight, was able to locate the 82-year-old in steep, rocky terrain.
The woman was rescued unharmed but very exhausted shortly before nightfall by rope rescue. A total of 16 rescue workers from Mallnitz Mountain Rescue, two alpine police officers and a helicopter were involved in the rescue operation.
