Former Defense Minister Norbert Darabos, once the highest commander in the army’s ranks, was now on an unusual mission near the border.
When Darabos from the Croatian Minihof went out on the street corner on Sunday to get his morning paper, he was quickly reminded of his previous duties. Six refugees stood not far from his front door.
“A Celebrity Spotted Refugees”
“Is the police good in Austria? She is bad in Hungary,” the foreigners told Darabos in English. He informed the management. The message was quickly passed on. “A celebrity has discovered refugees,” it sounded a moment later on the police radio.
At the same time, a resident of the village of 350 met two other migrants and called soldiers for help. Shortly afterwards, Darabos encountered the following refugees. Particularly striking was a man standing there without shoes. They were broken, he held them in his hand. Another stranger said he had been gone for a long time and hadn’t eaten for three days.
“You don’t know where to start”
“The pressure on the army and the police is increasing. Our soldiers, who do great things like the policemen, had to be in three places at once. You don’t know where to start anymore,” said the once high-ranking politician.
He took the initiative. Darabos took two soldiers by car to the six fugitives near his home, and other recruits to others who were detained. In any case, the soldiers felt honored to be supported in their mission by the former defense minister.
Darabos’ conclusion: “The situation in the Croatian Minihof and neighboring towns has become untenable. The effort is enormous. The work that the army and the police have to do is beyond bearable,” the ex-defense minister criticized.
A similar picture occurred to the residents of Deutschkreutz on Monday morning. “Again 36 migrants were arrested. When will the federal government finally come up with a clear solution to this escalating problem?” asked Manfred Kölly, the former mayor who is running again for the mayoral elections in October.
New bus stop for migrants at the border
Kölly made people sit up and notice with an unusual response. He wants to set up a bus stop for refugees at the border crossing. “With this extra station, no more migrants come to our community. They are informed about this by information on site or safely via tractors and mobile phones,” says Kölly.
