During a hike in Heiligenblut in Carinthia Tuesday afternoon, a German couple found themselves on an alpine plot. There were some cows and calves grazing, but one of them suddenly ran towards the couple.
“The alpine plot is fenced with an electronic pasture fence,” confirms the police. “There is a footpath through this lot, which the couple drove on.” The cow drove the two German holidaymakers in front of it and eventually pushed the 59-year-old woman over an eight-meter high dike.
“It was a mother cow and her calves were very close,” explains Harald Rader, chief of the Heiligenblut Mountain Rescue Service. “It’s a normal maternal instinct that the cow showed there.”
“The woman injured her ankle and was unable to continue on her own,” police said. After first aid from the notified emergency room doctor, the 59-year-old was taken to the BKH Lienz by the C7 rescue helicopter. In addition to the Heiligenblut police, the Heiligenblut mountain rescue service, the Winklern rescue service and the rescue helicopter were also deployed.
