Plans since 2015 – Iran nuclear deal: Borrell hopes for deal

Date:

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell has expressed confidence that negotiations to restore the Iran nuclear deal could soon be successfully concluded. He had received responses to his compromise proposal for an agreement text from both Iran and the United States, he said on Wednesday on the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Prague. He thought this was appropriate.

Borrell stressed that it was clear to him that there was a common ground and that the interests of all parties could be taken into account in the agreement. “I hope we don’t lose this momentum in the coming days and can close the deal.”

Sanctions will be lifted in consultation
In a diplomatic feat, representatives from the US, Iran and other countries have been trying to reach an agreement for weeks. This is intended to lift US sanctions and re-limit Tehran’s nuclear program.

Those were the original goals of a 2015 pact designed to prevent the Islamic Republic from building nuclear weapons. The United States left the agreement in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump.
