The German tank discount has been history again since midnight. The reduced energy and VAT rates, which were introduced on 1 June to unburden consumers, are no longer applicable immediately. At many gas stations this can already be felt in the form of price jumps.
A quick evaluation of prices at nearly 400 gas stations in Munich, Berlin and Hamburg on Thursday between 06:00 and 06:30 by the German news agency using ADAC’s fuel price data showed more than 2 euros for most premium petrol suppliers. , the diesel sometimes more than 2.30 euros per liter.
The abolition of the tax cut could increase the price of premium gasoline by 35 cents and the price of diesel by 17 cents. However, the prices have already risen sharply in the past two weeks. In addition, gas station operators also bought at the reduced rate until Wednesday and were therefore initially able to sell petrol and diesel more cheaply. So it may take some time before the abolition of the tax cut – also known as tank discount – has a full impact on customers.
France increases fuel discount
While the German government has abolished the fuel discount, the discount on petrol pumps in France has been increased. Instead of the previous 18 cents, a discount of 30 cents per liter of petrol or diesel will be given on the mainland in September and October. According to the Ministry of Economy, there is only a smaller discount in Corsica and in some overseas territories.
In the following months, the tank discount should therefore melt away in France. In November and December it is reduced to 10 cents on the mainland and completely phased out by the end of the year. Incidentally, prices in Austria are currently on average between 1.7 and 1.8 euros per liter for Super and between 1.8 and 1.9 euros per liter for Diesel.
