UN suspends Russia from Human Rights Council

UN countries have decided to suspend Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council in response to the crimes it is committing in Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly has decided: Suspend Russia from Human Rights Council This is a decision taken in retaliation for the massacre of civilians that took place in the city of Bucha, on the outskirts of Kiev.

The proposal was passed by 93 votes to 24, with 58 Member States abstaining and several others not speaking directly.

The General Assembly, which had already twice condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is considering in its statutes the removal of a country from the Human Rights Council if it commits “serious and systematic” abuses.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dimitro Kuleba, has celebrated the adoption of the text, claiming that “war criminals have no place in UN bodies designed to protect human rights”. In this sense, he thanked the countries that “have chosen the right side of history.”

The UN Human Rights Council already approved the establishment of an independent commission to investigate the crimes committed in Ukraine since Russia launched its military offensive on February 24.

Before the General Assembly, Russian delegation He sticks to the position Moscow has maintained in recent days and has therefore insisted that the charges are false and that its military has not killed any civilians in Ukraine.
