A gang of robbers acted extremely brutally in January this year in an attack on an elderly couple in Lower Austria. The perpetrators wounded their victims with an ax and then tied up the spouses. The attackers managed to flee with gold, jewelry and money worth six figures. The police were able to record a successful investigation and investigate the seven-man robbers. Four suspects are still being sought.
The alleged perpetrators already have a lot on their plate, they are being robbed from far beyond the Austrian borders and the investigation into the seven suspects is still ongoing.
Beaten with an ax
Their approach can only be described as extremely brutal, as witnessed by the attack on the elderly couple in the evening of January 23 in Strasshof on the northern railway line. The perpetrators entered the couple’s house masked and immediately attacked the 82-year-old, who was sitting in front of the television in the living room. One of the men hit him with an ax and the pensioner tried to fend off the blows with his hands and feet to avoid being hit on the head, police said.
His 78-year-old wife, who was aware of the noise, checked on him shortly afterwards. She was immediately overpowered by another assailant and thrown to the ground. The woman was hit hard on the back of the head. Then they dragged the pensioner by the hair into the study and demanded money and gold, then looted cupboards and drawers themselves and seized jewelry and money.
Tied with belt and cords
After that, the spouses were dragged to the furniture safe. The perpetrators threatened the couple and also beat the old man when the victims did not immediately open the safe due to the excitement. After several attempts, the 82-year-old managed to open the safe. Before leaving the house, the assailants tied the couple’s hands and feet with a dog leash, clothing and power cords. After some time, the woman managed to free herself and alert the police.
The two victims suffered broken bones, severe bruises and lacerations to the hands and feet. Hospital treatment was necessary. The couple has been struggling with serious fears since the crime and receive psychological care.
However, the detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Service of Lower Austria gradually tracked down the gang: a 28-year-old Serb was initially the target. He would have bought the used getaway car. The vehicle was secured in Vienna-Favorit. As a result, six other Serb citizens between the ages of 29 and 48 were tracked down.
Manhunt underway, information requested
The two suspects in Austria, the 28-year-old and a 48-year-old, have not known. The younger man was taken to Korneuburg prison by order of the public prosecutor and his accomplice was reported. A 43-year-old was arrested in Croatia on March 29 under a European arrest warrant and extradited to Austria on August 4. The man confessed. Four more suspects between the ages of 29 and 47 are wanted.
Relevant information about the whereabouts of the suspects, anonymous if desired, was requested from the National Criminal Investigation Department of Lower Austria (tel.: 059133-30-3333).
