Ursula von der LeyenPresident of the European Commission has called for a cap on the price of Russian gas as an urgent intervention measure in the electricity market to control electricity bills. In addition, it plans to implement a medium-term reform to decouple the price of gas from that of electricity.

“I firmly believe that it’s time to put a cap on the price of Russian gas exported to Europeunderlined the leader of the European Executive at an event of his party in Germany, the CDU.

Among the tools to stop the rise in electricity prices, he pointed to the design of the electricity market, giving as an example the option of “decoupling the price of gas from the cost of electricity”, apart from betting on “huge investments “in the field of renewable energy.

Von der Leyen has insisted on the need to reduce energy demand, given the scarcity in international markets. “You have to save energy intelligently, especially in times of higher demand, so that you don’t need that gas,” he said.

Similarly, the German Conservative has pointed to the excessive profits of electricity-producing companies and it is necessary to ensure that these funds serve to support ‘low-income people and vulnerable companies in these times of expensive electricity’.

All these measures will be discussed at the emergency meeting of European energy ministers on 9 September, where it will be discussed how to intervene in the market to stop the price increase.

Russia responds that it will shut off the gas tap

Following von der Leyen’s words, Russia has warned that it will stop gas supplies if the EU decides to cut its price. “It will be like with oil. Just there will be no Russian gas in Europe“, the deputy head of the Russian Security Council assured, Dimitri Medvedev.

That same Friday, the G7 reached an agreement to limit the price of oil from Russia and its derivatives.
