Love, work, education, the weather – there are many reasons why nearly 600,000 Austrians – they are practically the sixth largest federal state – have moved their current center of life abroad. An important topic that has been on the agenda for years is the possibility of dual citizenship.
Their interests are represented, among others, by the World Association of Austrias Abroad (AÖWB), which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and is meeting these days in Vienna. Because: Only in the rarest cases is it possible for Austrians to take on a second citizenship without losing the original citizenship.
Not an easy way
For most compatriots, who still have a red-white-red heart, despite the sometimes great distance from home, this is not a viable option. On the occasion of the current conference in Vienna, the World Association has again submitted its claim for dual citizenship – directly to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.
The general director of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Christoph Lieben-Sutter, was also honored as Austrian Abroad of the Year.
