Up to 65 billion euros – German government decided emergency measures

Date:

After hours of negotiations, the German government has agreed on further financial support for civilians. A total of 65 billion euros has to be tackled. The measures include one-off payments, reduced prices and a successor to the nine-euro ticket.

In concrete terms, pensioners receive a one-off payment of 300 euros, students 200. An additional heating subsidy of 415 euros is provided for people with housing allowance. In addition, the decision document of the traffic light coalition, consisting of the SPD, FDP and the Greens, provides for a reduced price for electricity. This should apply to a certain basic consumption, the price would no longer be limited for the additional consumption.

The newspaper was published in Berlin on Sunday. Other points are the increase in the standard rate for the needy to about 500 euros – singles currently receive 449 euros per month basic security – and a successor to the popular nine euro ticket. In the future there will be a national ticket for public transport that costs between 49 and 69 euros per month. The condition is that “the federal states make at least the same amount available,” says the newspaper. That means 1.5 billion euros, with which the federal government wants to contribute.

Negotiations lasted 18 hours
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens), Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) and Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) took part in the 18-hour negotiations. Buschmann then tweeted that the result was “very good”. Weeks of discussion preceded the meeting.

This is already the third package of measures to compensate for the price increases. Until now, for example, the electricity price surcharge to promote renewable energy has been abolished and a lump-sum energy allowance of 300 euros has been decided for all employees. Other measures include a one-off benefit of 100 to 200 euros for all unemployed people or 100 euros per child and the aforementioned 9 euros ticket for public transport from June to August.
