Strallegg in Styria: A 50-year-old man grabbed a gun and shot “Joe”. He has neither a weapon passport nor a weapon possession card and is reported to the public prosecutor’s office. But that doesn’t dry a girl’s tears.
“Joe went to heaven” – These are words that a three-year-old barely understands and certainly cannot comfort. “She cries and is desperate,” her mother says. “The two had the same heart and often even slept together in the dog bed.” But ‘Joe’, also a valuable, trained hunting dog, was the victim of an illegal shooting.
Free roaming in action
“We went to the hunting area to check the deer population,” says the hunter in charge in Strallegg. “’Joe’ ran free with a second dog on duty. One came back after ten minutes, but there was no sign of ‘Joe’.”
But the hunting dog, who also wore a neon yellow signal band, was equipped with a GPS tracker – with this the hunters found the four-legged friend after a long search. Dead. Shot.
“An Outright Lie”
Initially, there was no trace of the perpetrator. The 50-year-old later turned himself in. He would only have fired “in the direction” of the dogs because they panicked his calves. “An outright lie,” said the ward hunter. “The GPS proves that the dog wasn’t running around in the meadow.” In addition, the professional says: “You can’t just shoot around in the area! This is brutally dangerous. What if it hits a mushroom picker?”
The alleged perpetrator had illegally used a small-caliber rifle. He does not have a weapon pass or weapon card. He has been reported to the public prosecutor’s office.
