“My friend Boris” – Zelenskyj: emotional parting words for Johnson

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy bids farewell to outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an emotional guest post. “At every meeting and every conversation, Boris asked a very good question: what else? What else do you need?” Zelenskyy wrote in an article in the British newspaper Mail on Sunday. Direct and reliable support like this cannot be taken for granted and not all politicians are ready for it.

During his two visits to Kiev, Johnson walked the streets with him and also got to know ordinary Ukrainians, Zelenskyj wrote. “We even started jokingly calling him ‘Boris Johnsoniuk,’ which sounds like a Ukrainian last name when you emphasize the last syllable — inspired by his Instagram account @borisjohnsonuk.”

“Legacy in the fight against Russian barbarity”
He knows that Johnson has not had an easy time because of “internal challenges”. However, he hopes that his “legacy in the fight against Russian barbarism” will be preserved.

Ukraine will continue to need the support of its closest ally Britain. Both countries should grow even closer to each other. “Like real friends. Just like me and my friend Boris.”

Johnson is leaving office after a number of scandals and enormous pressure from within his own ranks. Secretary of State Liz Truss is considered the likely winner of the internal party vote for his successor. The results should be announced on Monday.
