Dive death in Croatia – the father of the deceased: “There is no listening”

Date:

More than three years have passed since the tragic death of Verena Heinz (20). There is still no verdict. Verena’s father has doubts about Croatian justice.

It was July 24, 2019: Verena Heinz went diving with her father Dieter off the coastal town of Malinska on the island of Krk. Diving was her passion, both father and daughter have years of experience. The terrible thing happened on that July day: a motorboat driver caught the 20-year-old and fatally injured her.

A year later, in August 2020, Croatian prosecutors filed charges against the motorboat driver. At the beginning of the trial in July 2021, Dino D. (29) denied any guilt: he did not want to see the divers. Since then, the criminal proceedings have stalled.

“It is sad that we are in debt”
Witnesses and experts testified on several days of the hearing in the court in Rijeka – including Dieter Heinz. “It is sad that we are in debt and our experience is not taken into account. Our opinion is not heard by the Croatian judiciary.” The process now revolves around a crucial question, explains Croatian lawyer Ivan Primorac: How fast was the motorboat? An appraisal should make that clear. But no expert has been found for weeks.

In the meantime Primorac has also filed a claim against the owner of the motorboat and the insurance company. According to the lawyer, liability has so far been denied by this company.
