A few days after the failed assassination attempt on controversial Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner, police arrested the alleged attacker’s partner. She had given several interviews about the suspect after the incident last Thursday. However, images from surveillance cameras now showed that the 23-year-old was lying.
She stated that she had not seen her partner Fernando André Sabag Montiel in the 48 hours before the crime. According to the investigators, CCTV footage showed that Brenda Uliarte was with the alleged perpetrator on the day of the failed assassination attempt.
Uliarte had given several interviews and was surprised, among other things, by the television channel Telefe. She never expected her boyfriend to do such a thing. The 35-year-old complained about the economy “like everyone else” but never spoke “aggressively” about Kirchner.
Technical reasons prevented the shot
Sabag Montiel pointed a gun at former head of state and now vice president Cristina Kirchner on Thursday as she was greeted by supporters outside her apartment. President Alberto Fernández later said the gun was loaded with five bullets and could not fire only for technical reasons. The alleged attacker has already been arrested.
The attack came amid mounting tensions over Kirchner, who served as president of the South American country from 2007 to 2015. Last week, the prosecutor’s office had demanded a 12-year prison sentence for the left-wing vice president. Kirchner would have won several government contracts for a friend of his construction contractor without a tender and put the money into his own pocket with the construction costs. She rejects the allegations and accuses the judiciary of investigating her for political reasons.
