The collective labor agreement dispute at Lufthansa is turning upside down: the pilots have decided on a second strike wave. The company can still avert the multi-day strike planned from Wednesday with a “serious” offer. Pilots had already paralyzed the entire operation of Lufthansa’s core company last Friday.
According to the recent strike call, Lufthansa passenger planes departing from Germany will go on strike on Wednesday and Thursday. At freight subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo, the strike is planned from Wednesday to Friday.
8.2 percent inflation compensation required
Before the Munich Labor Court, the union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) changed a detail of its collective bargaining demand and is now demanding a “flat-rate” inflation adjustment of 8.2 percent. In the current year, salaries are expected to increase by 5.5 percent. There would also be a new salary scale and more money for sick days, holidays and training.
According to Lufthansa, VC’s combined requirements would increase cockpit personnel costs by 40 percent. This is beyond all reason, even without taking into account the financial consequences of the Corona crisis. Over a period of two years, this would mean an additional burden of 900 million euros
It was only in July that the Verdi union paralyzed the flight operations of the largest German airline for almost an entire day with a ground crew warning strike. The flight attendant union Ufo wants to negotiate for its members in the autumn. It declared its “express and unconditional solidarity” with the pilots’ strike.
