Russia expert: – “The ice age will last at least until 2030”

In the “Krone” interview, Russia expert Gerhard Mangott reveals why the danger of an EU split is real and how he assesses the relationship with Europe’s counterpart.

„krone“: At the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the EU seemed very united, very united. Meanwhile, the cohesion is increasingly crumbling. Do you see the danger of a split?
Gerard Mangott: Absolute. This can happen with sanctions, for example if Hungary vetoes it. A split is therefore possible, but not very likely at the moment. A bigger problem in this regard than sanctions is the different ideas about Ukraine’s war goals. Some countries want all Russian troops to be expelled from Ukraine, including Crimea, which has been occupied since 2014. Other states, such as Germany and France, want to return to a status quo before February 24, 2022, when the current war broke out. In this scenario, Crimea would remain annexed by Russia. These two different attitudes also affect arms supplies in Europe.
