“Urgently needed” – Election campaign: Brazil restricts access to weapons

Date:

Brazil’s Supreme Court has temporarily made it harder to buy weapons, citing the “risk of political violence” during the presidential campaign. The need to restrict access to arms and ammunition is “extremely and exceptionally urgent”.

According to the court, Fachin’s ruling stipulates that only “persons who can demonstrate a specific need” may possess weapons – one of the rules that far-right president and pro-weapons owner Jair Bolsonaro relaxed by decree.

Moreover, firearms may now only be purchased for the defense of public security or national defense – and no longer for “personal interest”.

Fachin said he made the decision “in light of recent and regrettable incidents of political violence.” He did not disclose whether he was referring to the July shooting of a Workers’ Party (PT) activist by a police officer who supported Bolsonaro or the failed assassination attempt on Vice President Cristina Kirchner in Argentina.

Bolsonaro back in the election campaign
Presidential elections will be held in Brazil on October 2, the election campaign has already started (see video above). Left-wing ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has widened his lead in polls over incumbent Bolsonaro. The latter, on the other hand, had hoped that the recent good economic data would provide a boost for the elections.
