“It wasn’t easy” – No referendum on basic income in Berlin

Date:

A planned referendum on a trial basic income has failed in Berlin. The initiators failed to collect the necessary 175,000 signatures. They made that clear on Tuesday for several reasons.

For example, it is difficult to collect signatures on paper, which is why the initiative is also focusing on electronic voting. Another reason for the failure is the low income of many people who might have provided basic income. As a result, they would have limited time and other resources.

1200 euros per month
The referendum called for a science-based model project with about 3,500 participants. They should receive about 1,200 euros per month for three years. Both the red-red-green Senate and the House of Representatives have rejected this proposal in the past.

Discussion reached
The people will not decide now. This would have required 175,000 signatures, and 125,000 were reached after a four-month collection phase. While the Basic Income Expedition initiative was disappointed, “great things had been accomplished”. “Berlin is talking about unconditional basic income again,” officials said on Tuesday. So far, attempts have been made to establish an unconditional basic income in Finland, Kenya and Namibia.
