Pretend maintenance work
The two men, aged 36 and 37, always followed the same pattern: they allegedly posed as employees of a telecommunications provider over the telephone and deceived their victims – many of them elderly pensioners – into carrying out checks and maintenance work on lines. .

If the two suspects gained access to the living space, one of the two scammers allegedly distracted the residents, while the second searched for valuables and stole them or at least attempted to do so. According to police, the duo mainly stole jewelry and cash – mostly they tried.

Theft proven in three states
According to the investigators of the State Criminal Investigation Department of Lower Austria, the suspects were able to prove fourteen facts from the second half of 2020. The crime scene is mainly located in various districts in Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Salzburg.

The 36-year-old was arrested in Germany on June 28 this year on the basis of an EU arrest warrant issued by the St. Pölten Public Prosecutor’s Office and extradited to Austria on Tuesday. He refused to testify and was taken to prison in St. Pölten.

A 37-year-old German was arrested in his home country for a similar crime in November 2022 and is in custody there, as the State Police Directorate of Lower Austria announced.
