Renowned American immunologist Anthony Fauci expects future coronavirus vaccines to be as common as flu vaccines. “It is becoming increasingly clear that in the absence of a dramatically different variant, we are likely going down a path with a vaccination frequency comparable to that of the annual flu vaccine as we look at the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said on Tuesday.
According to Fauci, there will likely be annually updated Covid 19 vaccinations that would be tailored to the currently circulating variants. The US authorities had approved two corona vaccines adapted to the ommicron variants in recent days.
The two preparations are so-called bivalent mRNA vaccines from the companies Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna. They are adapted to the original virus type as well as to the ommicron sublines BA.4 and BA.5.
Fauci, who is stepping down from his post as presidential adviser at the end of the year, urged the American public to inject the drug. It is central to optimal protection against Covid-19.
The EU also allows Omicron boosters
A day after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved emergency use as booster shots for two vaccines tailored to the ommicron variants of the coronavirus circulating, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) followed suit last Thursday and gave the green light for approval of two ommicron boosters.
