Up to 240 km/h – these are Vienna’s hotspots for illegal street racing

Dangerous duels in illegal street races at speeds over 200 km/h: Vienna has increasingly become a hotspot for speeding in recent years. The rapid judge was used approximately 270 times.

In the case of grid squares, the Vienna Police has measured the following maximum speeds in the urban area: 240 km/h instead of the allowed 130 km/h in 2020 and 228 km/h instead of the allowed 80 km/h in the previous year .

“It urgently needs to be tightened up”
“We know the problem of illegal street racing and ‘roadrunners’. In order to be able to tackle the problem more effectively, tightening up is urgently needed. In extreme cases, we also want to make it possible to seize vehicles,” said Transport Alderman Ulli Sima (SPÖ). It’s not about those who are a little too fast every now and then, but about extreme speeders who pose a real danger.

Belt and Kahlenberg are popular circuits
The Kahlenberg is a popular meeting point for the car tuner scene. Especially in the evenings, on weekends. Often several hundred souped-up cars take part in such gatherings. The Vienna Belt is also a popular route for the “roadrunners”, as are the Triester Straße outside the city and the routes around the Shopping City Süd in Vösendorf (Lower Austria).
