As Marat Chusnullin, deputy head of the Russian government, announced on Thursday, repair work on the bridge to the Crimean peninsula, which was severely damaged by an explosion in October, is now fully passable for cars again.
500 workers worked around the clock for four and a half months and the construction work was now completed 39 days ahead of schedule “as a great present” for the Day of the Russian Defender of the Fatherland.
The railway bridge is still being repaired and will probably not be operational again before the summer.
Putin blames Ukraine for the explosion
In October, the bridge connecting the annexed Ukrainian peninsula to mainland Russia, which Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin personally inaugurated, was partially damaged by an explosion. Moscow blamed Kiev for the truck attack. Ukraine denied this.
Important supply route for the Russian army
The bridge over the Kerch Strait is an important supply route for Russia to supply soldiers fighting in Ukraine with military equipment and also has a high symbolic value for Moscow.
