With a diatribe against the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss, the wife of the fired Secretary of State Johnny Mercer caused a stir. “The best person I know was fired by the idiot Liz Truss,” Felicity Cornelius-Mercer tweeted. “This system stinks and treats people terribly.”
Mercer served three times with British troops in Afghanistan and was the first Foreign Secretary with primary responsibility for veterans. The 41-year-old was disappointed, but much more reserved than his wife.
According to their description, the conservative politician asked the new head of government: “Why would you want to do that, who can do this role better than me, which of your friends will get the job, you promised a meritocracy.”
“I don’t know”
Truss replied, “I don’t know.” Downing Street later announced Secretary of State James Heappey would also take over from Mercer.
Truss had occupied nearly all cabinet posts by Tuesday evening. The otherwise sober PA news agency called the government reshuffle “brutal”.
Truss almost exclusively appointed confidants, loyalists and right-wing representatives of her Conservative Party, firing all supporters of her internal opponent, Rishi Sunak.
