Drama in Greece – rudderless in the sea: refugee child (4) died

Date:

During a dramatic rescue operation in the Mediterranean, a completely exhausted four-year-old girl was rescued from a ship carrying migrants and died shortly after. The unconscious child was taken with his mother by a naval helicopter to a hospital in Crete, where he could only be pronounced dead.

According to Greek media, the ship was adrift about 50 nautical miles west of Crete. The remaining 61 migrants were rescued by a passing freighter. According to the media, there was no food or water on board.

The ship would have departed from Turkey or a country in the Middle East and is on its way to Italy. This route is long and dangerous, especially as people often travel on old cutters and barges. Accidents and mishaps happen again and again. Still, smugglers are increasingly using the passage as Greece protects its maritime borders with Turkey, making crossings from Turkey’s west coast to the Greek islands of the Eastern Aegean difficult.
