Russia postpones moon mission for another year

Date:

Due to technical difficulties, Russia has postponed the launch of its Luna-25 spacecraft to explore the moon for another year to mid-2023. During the mission, which will lead to the moon’s south pole, the ice deposits there must be examined.

“The main problem affecting the launch preparation schedule is that the Doppler speed and rangefinder does not meet the technical requirements,” Russia’s Roskosmos space agency said on Wednesday.

For safety reasons, a start is no longer possible this year. The aim is therefore to start between June and October 2023. In fact, the probe should have been underway long ago. The first planned launch date for a lunar probe was 2012, and May 2022 was last targeted.

“Luna-25” – the first Russian mission to the moon since the 1970s – is part of the Russian lunar program. The goal is to build a space station on Earth’s satellite by 2040.
