The strict testing regime is over. Nearly 80,000 gargle tests have been conducted at Wiener Netze alone. Value: 317,000 euros.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the city of Vienna implemented a strict testing regime. Most Viennese tested themselves at least three times a week. Many companies therefore diligently ordered “Everything Gargles” kits. Now it turns out: a little too zealous.
worth 317,000 euros
Hundreds of expired test kits ended up in a landfill in Simmering. And also in the basement of Wiener Netze there are at least 22 pallets with 3600 tests each – which expired at the beginning of September. According to the office of Alderman for Public Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ), a suit costs four euros. That means that there is about 317,000 euros here. “Tax money is very loosely in municipal utilities. Managers should pay for this out of pocket,” said Toni Mahdalik of the FPÖ.
Test kits were free
According to Wiener Netzen, the kits were made available free of charge. “In addition, they can still be used three months after the best-before date,” emphasizes a spokeswoman. If you don’t need them by then, they will be properly disposed of.
