Tapia calls for the start-up of the second LNG loading platform in the Port of Bilbao. to speed up

Date:

The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government has asked for this during the conference on the energy sector, this Wednesday; It has also called for regulatory security mechanisms to ensure that previously contracted LNG ships arrive.

The Advisor for Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment to the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapiaclaimed this Wednesday in Madrid, in the Energy Sector Conferencearound the . “significantly” speed up commissioning of the second LNG (liquefied natural gas) loading dock in the Port of Bilbao. Tapia also asked safety regulatory mechanisms to ensure that previously contracted LNG ships arriveand, along with it, has claimed that the capacity of the gas pipeline connection via Irun is improved.

During the conference, Arantxa Tapia thanked the Spanish government for following up on the Basque government’s suggestions to activate interruptibility and cogeneration mechanisms for intensive industry. As he noted, these are “very welcome” decisions by a very important part of the Basque industry, as there are some companies that “temporarily stop production due to high prices”.

Tapia has expressed the Basque Country’s interest in Spain to “significantly accelerate” the start-up of the second LNG loading dock in the Port of Bilbao, a commitment, he recalled, agreed in the national policy debate in July.

In addition, he underlined the importance of improving the capacity of the gas pipeline connection through Irun, so that this issue will be discussed in the Council of Ministers to be held next Friday, adding that “This improvement will not be enough, but after that a series of actions to be carried out in the French state”.

Tapia recalled that other “relevant” measures were proposed in the Euskadi Energy Contingency Plan, including one related to activating some sort of security regulatory mechanism to ensure that ships with contracted services reach their destinations, and avoiding what will happen to the masks during the time of the pandemic.

As he explained, it is that the LNG ships previously contracted and with commitments to arrive in the state “cannot go to other countries or other places due to the increase in price, and there is a mechanism that it avoids situations in one way or another, through sanctions or a regulatory mechanism.

“Today we can have relative security of supply, but due to the rise in prices or the competition that may exist, some of these ships will not disappear,” he warned.

Overlooking the Council of Ministers of Europewhich will take place in Brussels on Friday, the government of Spain has asked to raise two questions, such as, for example, accelerating the border adjustment mechanisms related to the control of CO2 emissions, because, if not, “a competition that is not good, and less at the moment”.

He also believes that the processing of wind energy generation infrastructures in Europe should be accelerated and that work should be done to integrate European industry into supply chains.

“We have to achieve that 500 GW in the year 2030. We are eight years further and we all know that the start-up of all those actions usually takes a very long time, about six or seven years,” he indicated. the conference, where he therefore insisted on the need to accelerate these procedures and ensure that European industry “will be present in all supply chains”.

“I’m not talking about protectionism; I’m talking about European industry that isn’t really harmed as a result of others producing at much lower prices than we can do in Europe,” he said.
