A new United Nations report finds growing poverty among women and girls and laments persistent inequalities between men. “Our data shows an undeniable decline in women’s lives,” said Sima Bahous, UN Women’s executive director. Their situation was exacerbated by the global income, security, education and health crises.
Significantly more efforts are needed to achieve the UN’s sustainable development goal for gender equality by 2030, Bahous said at the presentation of the “Gender Snapshot 2022” report, published Wednesday.
44 million women and girls displaced
For example, at the end of 2021, some 44 million women and girls were displaced from their homes – more than ever before. About 1.2 billion women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 live in areas and countries where access to safe abortion is limited.
The report emphasizes that equal access to education would significantly improve living conditions. At the current rate of repealing discriminatory laws and closing gaps in legal protection, it will take nearly 300 years to truly achieve gender equality.
