The allegations are not new, but the figures presented Wednesday at a meeting of the UN Security Council have reached a new dimension. The US government accused the Russian military of forcing people arrested in the war zone into deportation camps and then taking them against their will to Russia or Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine. It is estimated that between 900,000 and 1.6 million people were deported from their homes in this way.
In fact, Ukraine’s UN delegation claims that up to 2.5 million people have been deported from the south and east of the country, often to distant Siberia or Russia’s far east. However, independent verification of this information is hardly possible.
Norwegian UN Ambassador Mona Juul spoke of a “growing body of independent information” pointing to human rights violations in these camps. The UN Human Rights Office in New York cited credible reports that Ukrainian children were separated from their parents and deported to Russia for rapid naturalization and adoption. “The ongoing allegations of violent displacement, deportation and so-called filter camps by Russia and affiliated local forces are extremely disturbing,” said Rosemary DiCarlo, UN chief political affairs officer.
Russian ambassador: Kiev abuses civilians as protection debt
Russia denied the allegations. “We don’t really understand what is being discussed here,” said Russian ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebensia. The term “filtration” is not clearly defined and facilities where Ukrainians can express their willingness to immigrate to Russia are common. After that, they could live freely in Russia and leave the country at any time. According to Nebensya, many people would like to flee from a “Ukrainian regime” that uses its citizens as human shields.
