The re-election campaign of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen is under a lucky star: the well-known astrologer Gerda Rogers now joins his prominent supporters from politics and culture.
“He has shown that he can lead our country through crises very well — and with remarkable calm, strength and stability,” Rogers told APA on Thursday. The astrologer has not yet predicted the election results for October 9, but on her website she gives the sign Capricorn – incumbent Van der Bellen has his birthday on January 18 – professionally for October: “There is still an intensive exchange with others for the order of the day, even if you don’t like other opinions. With good will a consensus can be found.”
On Friday, the 78-year-old will officially start his election campaign in the Vienna Museum Quarter. In addition to prominent Greens, supporters of other parties have also expressed their support, such as Viennese Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and First Vice-President of the European Parliament, Othmar Karas (ÖVP).
Record number of candidates
After waiting for the grace period, it has been clear since Wednesday which candidates will be admitted to the federal presidential election – all have been able to submit the required 6,000 statements of support: in addition to Van der Bellen, MFG boss Michael Brunner, ex-BZÖ politician Gerald Grosz, FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz, the Waldviertel shoe manufacturer Heinrich Staudinger, ex-“Krone” columnist and lawyer Tassilo Wallentin and beer party chairman Dominik Wlazny. Incidentally, there has never been such a long list since the introduction of direct elections in 1951.
