The Vice President of the Government of Spain, Yolanda Diazas well as the Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzonwill meet today, Thursday, with the Executive Director of Carrefour Spain, Alexandre de Palmasto address the proposal to put a limit on the price of some foodstuffs considered commodities, including eggs, bread or milk.

The French distributor has just announced that it has a basic basket of 30 productsboth food and cleaning, for 30 euros, to ease the purchasing power limitation.

After today’s first meeting, the vice president plans to continue talks with major distributors and consumer associations on Monday, looking for an agreement.

I never spoke of a price intervention, but of a different measure for an agreement between distributors and consumer associationsto do something completely legal, which has already been done and worked in France,” Díaz noted.

The vice president has acknowledged that she has not yet formally discussed the issue with employers and unions, and has stressed that producers should also be taken into account. He believes that both businesses and consumers will be “on” the circumstances. “I never talked about one-sided limits, but about agreements,” he emphasized.

For its part, Carrefour will offer for sale from September 12 to January 8 a “basic” shopping basket for 30 euros, containing products for breakfast, canned food, pasta, oil and coffee, as well as a selection of drugstore, cleaning and perfume items.

“The current situation requires agile and effective measures. At this time, when every purchase is more valuable than ever, Carrefour is responding to its customers: we are working to offer savings solutions that protect the purchasing power of families in Spain”, the distributor announced.

The employer rejects the price cap for interventionists

The chairman of the CEE, Antonio Garamendic, has rejected the government’s proposal. “We cannot share price intervention. This is starting to look more like Soviet programming.. Now we’re going to see if there are 20, 30 or 50 products on the market that I’m going to intervene in,” said Garamendi.

For the leader of the employers’ association, if one tries to regulate “absolutely everything”, one ends up with “an intervened economy, a intervened state and a lack of freedom”.
