Sad news from the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna: After the birth of a second giraffe baby on Monday, the young animal had to be euthanized on Thursday – despite all the efforts of nurses and veterinarians.
For giraffe cow “Sofie” it was the first birth, reports the zoo. The young animal was born on Monday, but a short time later it caused great concern to the caretakers. “In the first few hours we had to realize that it was very weak. For a long time it was not possible for him to sit alone and drink from his mother,” said Thomas Voracek, head of the veterinary practice at Schönbrunn Zoo.
“Finally didn’t have a chance”
Caregivers and vets lovingly and self-sacrificingly cared for the giraffe girl, but in the end you had to face the truth: the young animal “didn’t have a chance in the end and we had to redeem it this morning”. The mother is doing well, she is now back with the group. “It was a valuable experience for the herd. These shared experiences not only strengthen the social bond, but also allow the animals to learn for the future,” explains the responsible person head of the zoological department Eveline Dungl.
However, there is good news: the giraffe cub “Amari”, which was born in early 2022, is still developing excellently.
