The vegan trend is also continuing in Vienna: the first purely plant-based supermarket opened on Thursday. Despite the high prices, the consumer is very interested.
Adherents of the vegan diet can rejoice. In addition to small specialty stores, the first food chain is now entering the alternative product market. Since Thursday there are 2,500 non-animal goods for sale in the new “Billa Plantilla” (7th, Mariahilferstraße 38). Those looking for spirulina crispy muesli, arsenic-free rice cakes and yoga pizza will certainly find what they are looking for in this exclusive store.
“Sustainable food movement”
“Vegan products are a win-win for animals, the environment and the climate. Plant-based nutrition is not a short-term fad, but a continuous development,” emphasizes the head of business development, Verena Wiederkehr. She justifies the often higher price of the products (12 euros for a stew) with the “still young industry that has to establish itself first”.
Big question
As can be seen on the day of the opening, the vegan fans are not deterred either. The plant-based meat counter is just too tempting, as one customer confirms: “I find it very practical that you don’t have to pay attention to animal ingredients in the food here.” The vegan meatloaf and nut press machine for making homemade legume cream is particularly popular.
