Fugitive accused of killing ten people and his own brother on a Cree reservation dies after being arrested by police
Myles Sanderson has taken the secret of the Cree nation’s massacre to his grave. The person wanted since Sunday for stabbing 10 people to death in the Canadian region of Saskatchewan was killed Thursday after being arrested at the end of a reckless chase on Praire Highway, 80 miles from where he committed the massacre in the company of his little brother, Damien, whom he also allegedly murdered in a frenzied spiral of terror, madness and blood.
According to police, Myles, 32, was suffering from a crisis of “anxiety” that caused his sudden death. Commander Rhonda Blackmore, who has been in charge of the operation since Sunday, explained that the officers alerted the emergency services and took measures to “save lives” – that is, CPR maneuvers – before the arrival of the ambulance. The suspect was transferred to Saskatton Hospital where only his death could be determined.
The Serious Incident Response Team, a brigade investigating deaths involving a police officer, has launched an investigation to determine the cause of death. In the first footage recorded by the witnesses of the arrest, Myles stands up, with no visible injuries, as he calmly lets himself be handcuffed. Just a few minutes later, death came to him.
The strange outcome leaves a trail of corpses without explanation. According to Blackmore, “our county can breathe easy” as there is no longer a “threat”, but “now that Myles has passed away, we may not understand the motivation” for the massacre. Hardly anyone believes that mobile will become known. Police believe most of the victims were chosen at random, but others were on the two brothers’ radar. Discriminating who is who has not yet been possible, despite the fact that the officers conducted more than 120 interviews. Only one of the unfortunate had an altercation with Myles long ago, but even that is not uncommon in a small community and with the alleged killer’s violent history.
The news left a bitter aftertaste for many of the deceased’s relatives, as well as the 18 injured in the multiple stabbing, who hoped “to get answers” when the fugitive “was captured. It’s heartbreaking,” said one of those who died. was close to the Canadian media.
Myles’s arrest took place at 3:30 PM (9:30 PM in Spain). Earlier, at 2:07 a.m., a witness called 911 to report that a house near the town of Wakaw had been broken into. The man recognized the suspect, who stopped in front of the house armed with a knife before stealing a Chevrolet Avalanche and driving onto the highway at high speed. From there, according to police, there were up to 20 calls from people who had seen Sanderson driving at a high speed -150 kilometers per hour. Security forces intercepted him south of the town of Rosthern. From there to the Cree reserve it is approximately 130 kilometers.
“The speed at which he was driving indicates someone desperately trying to get away,” Commander Blackmore reported. Myles even drove in the opposite direction to try to avoid the patrols, but at one point he lost control and went off the road. “He skipped the lanes and hit the ditch on the other side. And then the police caught him,” a witness explains. Forensics will now determine why he died shortly after
The knife from the stabbing was in the car. Although the suspect was addicted to alcohol and drugs, there were no drugs. Investigators also don’t have much faith in solving Damien Sanderson’s murder. The most reliable hypothesis is that he lost his life at the hands of his brother, perhaps in a dispute for unknown reasons. The body of Damien, 31, was discovered in a lawn a few yards from one of the thirteen scenes of the massacre.
The last person to see him alive is a neighbor who was drinking coffee on the patio of her house. The woman saw a speeding black vehicle—the SUV Myles fled into—and shortly after, a man who had difficulty walking and his face was covered in blood. He approached her and asked her to take him to a hospital. But when she told him to show her the wounds, the person fled. The research supports that it would be Damien.
In the James Smith community “we are still in shock,” the head of the nation said Wally Burns said on Thursday. “I have a lot of pain, a lot of anger. I wish it was a dream, but it isn’t.” Shortly before the police ended the manhunt, his parents appeared on television: “Myles, please turn yourself in. We don’t want anyone else to get hurt.”
