Killing spree unresolved – Canada: Murder suspect dies after arrest

Date:

The brothers wanted for murder after a series of knife attacks that left 10 dead in Canada. On Wednesday afternoon (local time), police arrested the younger of the two men near the village of Rosthern in Saskatchewan province – and then announced a few hours later the 30-year-old died in hospital following a “medical emergency”. His brother was found dead a few days ago. The mysterious case now raises a number of questions.

The police had chased the murder suspect, who was driving a stolen getaway car, with several patrol cars. He was eventually rammed and the man surrendered, an official told AP news agency. The search for him had gone on for three days.

The brother’s body, who was a year older, was found Monday and had injuries that he probably did not inflict on himself, according to investigators. The two men are believed to be responsible for the bloody killings on the James Smith Cree First Nation reservation and in the village of Weldon, which left 10 dead and 18 injured on Sunday.

“Attacks may never be solved”
The background to the knife attacks is still unknown – “and will probably never be cleared up,” a police spokeswoman said at a news conference after the death of the second murder suspect. Despite repeated inquiries, she did not comment on the exact circumstances of his death. This is now part of the autopsy and an “independent, outside investigation”. It should also be clarified whether the two brothers may have had helpers.

In any case, the stabbing raises the question of why the alleged attacker, who has since died, was at large at all. The arrested man had been a repeated delinquent “without major interruptions” for more than two decades. As an adult, he was convicted a total of 59 times over the years, including assault, threats of violence and theft, according to a February probation file. The man struggled with alcohol and drug problems since childhood and started using cocaine at the age of 14.

Victim attacked seven years ago
Police had been looking for him since May for allegedly violating the terms of his release. His long criminal record also shows that he stabbed one of the victims of the shooting seven years earlier, according to court documents. The authorities announced that an investigation would be launched into the probation service’s assessment of the ex-prisoner.
