The WHO makes it all clear: – Many “Disease X” patients have malaria

Is malaria or another known respiratory disease behind ‘Disease After major concerns in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the signal has now been given: the World Health Organization (WHO) has found malaria in ten of twelve medical samples from patients.

According to initial findings, the number of cases of the disease has not increased exponentially in a short time, unlike new diseases, and is roughly in line with expectations for the time of year, said Abdi Rahman Mahamad of the WHO.

As it is rainy season in the remote Panzi region of Kwango province, an increase in respiratory diseases, flu and malaria infections is also expected. However, the samples would be further examined, including for other diseases and pathogens. Pathogens include viruses and toxins that can cause disease.

Malnutrition is a risk
As reported, local authorities in Congo had recently reported an increase in cases of “Disease X” (see video above). Within just a few weeks, more than 400 cases of illness and 31 deaths were recorded. There was great concern about a possible new disease. The government is on high alert, said the Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Children under the age of five were particularly affected. Flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache and cough have been reported. Fever and headache are also common first signs of malaria. The tropical disease is transmitted via certain mosquitoes.

According to the WHO, many people in the African country are malnourished, meaning any infection can be life-threatening. The organization is now trying to transport more samples to laboratories. Due to poor roads and weather conditions, it takes more than two days to reach the area even from the capital Kinshasa.
