Denmark continues plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda in Africa. The governments of the two countries agreed on a political statement on Friday underlining a desire to further strengthen cooperation on asylum and migration. Both countries view the current asylum system as dysfunctional, according to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration.
New solutions are needed, they say. This includes the joint effort to establish a mechanism for the transfer of asylum seekers from Denmark to Rwanda for the processing of the asylum procedure and any subsequent protection.
The European Commission threatens legal action
A majority in the Danish parliament passed a law in June 2021 that would allow asylum centers in other countries. This allows the authorities to fly asylum seekers to third countries, where they have to wait for their application to be processed in Denmark. The European Commission criticized the project, making it clear at the time that it reserves the right to take legal action if the plans are implemented.
The British are pursuing similar plans
Great Britain is also planning with Rwanda. The Supreme Court in London is currently investigating Britain’s controversial asylum pact with the East African country.
The agreement provides that people who have entered the UK illegally, regardless of their origin and without their asylum application being examined, will be flown to Rwanda. They should be given the opportunity to apply for asylum there. Several asylum seekers and refugee organizations have filed charges against the British government’s actions.
