Despite the chilly Russo-British relations, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the new British king on his accession to the throne. “I wish Her Majesty success, health and all the best,” read a short telegram from the Russian president to Charles III, the text of which was also published on the Kremlin’s website on Saturday.
Moscow had already made it clear on Friday that the Russian government would be “out of the question” at the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II. “The option is not being considered,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Putin’s spokesman praised the Queen’s “wisdom” and global “authority” as “qualities that are rare on the international scene today.” But he also believes that the late British Queen has no “special place in the hearts of Russians”.
Brits are Ukraine’s biggest supporters
