After the tragic accident on Saturday morning in Schwaz in Tyrol, more details are now known. As reported, a tractor with livestock trailer fell 60 meters down. A 29-year-old resident died and two 17-year-olds were seriously injured. Cows also died.
A resident made a gruesome discovery shortly after 8 a.m. toward Proxenalm in the community of Schwaz. He saw a cattle trailer about 60 meters below the Almweg and the tractor that belonged to it 90 meters lower. The vehicle fell about 6:30 a.m. while driving down the approximately 200-meter-long steep slope. The reason for this is probably a small part of the path that was broken by the load of the tractor.
“It is a steep gully with rocks, but there is no water flowing. The tractor then came to a stop on its own in a flatter spot,” said Ferdinand Wildauer, head of operations for the Schwaz Mountain Rescue Service.
One dead and two seriously injured youths
“The tractor overturned several times, ejecting the three occupants,” said police spokesman Christian Viehweider. They stopped about 60 meters below the trail. For the 29-year-old driver, who died at the scene of the accident, all help came too late. A boy and a girl (both 17) were seriously injured and were taken by rescue helicopters to the clinic in Innsbruck after first aid. According to the control center of Tyrol, the fog made the large-scale operation more difficult. Due to the steep terrain, the mountain rescue team had to secure emergency services to get to the injured.
Cows dead, tractor makes for difficult rescue
There were eleven cows in the trailer, two of which died. A few others were injured but were driven into the valley with the help of local farmers on the sidewalk.
It is still unclear how the totally destroyed tractor should get out of the 200-meter-long canal. “You still have to look at that, because it is a heavy device with a few tons. Either with a helicopter or with a winch,” says Wildauer.
