Farewell to Elizabeth II, day by day

This Sunday, September 11, the Queen’s remains will leave Balmoral Castle for Edinburgh, where they will remain until September 13. The state funeral at Westminster Abbey in London on September 19 will conclude the funeral protocol.

SEPTEMBER 11

Around 10:00 local time (09:00 GMT) the royal procession with the coffin where Elizabeth II rests leaves Balmoral Castle towards the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh.

The hearse stops a few minutes later in the nearby town of Ballater to pay tribute to the inhabitants of the region. At 11:00 (10:00 GMT) the procession moves through the city of Aberdeen and approximately three hours later through Dundee, arriving at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh around 16:00 (15:00 GMT).

SEPTEMBER 12TH

In the afternoon, a procession will form in the courtyard of the Palace of Holyroodhouse to escort the coffin to Saint Gilles Cathedral, in the same city. King Carlos III and members of the royal family will participate in the procession and a later religious service at the temple to receive the remains.

A funeral chapel opens in the cathedral so the Scots can bid farewell to the Queen, whose body will be guarded by the Royal Company of Archers.

THE 13TH OF SEPTEMBER

The coffin departs from Edinburgh Airport in the afternoon in an Air Force (RAF) aircraft to Northolt Airport, west of London, accompanied by Princess Anne, daughter of Elizabeth II. From there it is transferred on the road to Buckingham Palacewhere he will rest in the circular room called the Bow Room, where the Queen offered lunch to visiting heads of state.

14 SEPTEMBER

The coffin is carried in procession in a carriage (cart for carrying guns) from the Royal Mounted Artillery to the Palace of Westminster, seat of the British Parliament, where a burning chapel in Westminster Hall (the oldest building in the complex) for four days, until the state funeral.

Once the body has arrived on the scene, through the streets of the political center of the capital, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate of the Anglican Church, will lead a religious service, accompanied by the Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle, in which they will be present the king and his family.

FROM SEPTEMBER 15 TO 18

Burning Chapel “of State” of Queen Elizabeth. Thousands of people are expected to pass through Westminster Hall to say their final goodbyes to the monarch.

19 SEPTEMBER

In the morning, the coffin is moved in procession the few meters between Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey for the state funeral celebrations at 11:00 AM local time (10:00 GMT).

At the end of the funeral, Elizabeth II will be transferred to Wellington Arch and from there to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, on the outskirts of London. There will be a final religious service before Elizabeth II’s burial.
