Mourning Thomas B. – Austrian ultra runner killed in crash

Running was his life – but now Austrian extreme athlete Thomas B. (52), who lives in Ireland, died in Spain.

The national team of Austrian ultra runners is in mourning. “You’re just not prepared for some events: a teammate is gone,” the union posted on Facebook a few days ago. What is meant by 52-year-old Thomas B. is a colleague from our own ranks.

Although the Austrian had long emigrated to Ireland, he still enthusiastically participated in running events with his red-white-red sports friends. For example in various marathons, ultra running and world and European championships for 24-hour races.

However, now Thomas B.’s life has come to an abrupt end. In the Spanish capital Madrid, the athlete was said to be preparing for a sweaty event again when a driver hit and killed him last week. The Austrian leaves behind his wife Niamh, to whom he was married for 25 years, and four children in his adopted home, County Kerry, Ireland.
