Congress Supports Processing New Taxes on Energy and Banking Despite Rejecting PP, Vox and Cs

Date:

PNV and EH Bildu have supported the processing, but the jeltzales have warned that either there is an agreement with Euskadi and Navarra, or they will try to cut taxes by all means. For its part, EH Bildu has complained that these taxes are “not enough”, in an effort to collect “very little” in these sectors.

The majority of Congress on Tuesday approved the new taxes on major energy companies and banks proposed by PSOE and United We Can during the debate on whether to authorize the initiative, leading to the rejection of PP, Vox and Ciudadanos.

In addition to the formations that make up the Executive, usual partners such as the Esquerra Republicana, the PNV or EH Bildu, but also the Canary Coalition, the BNG and the CUP have supported the processing of taxes.

“Extraordinary times require extraordinary efforts,” PSOE fiscal spokesman Patricia Blanquer has justified, assuring that “inflation also generates winners and losers” and that “it is reasonable to call for an effort now.”

United We Can spokesman Pablo Echenique has assured that the new taxes do not threaten the financial sustainability of the two sectors, which he has asked to “lend a hand”.

PNV and EH Bildu have supported its processing, but have requested an agreement for its application in the formal regime communities, Euskadi and Navarra, and have even warned the former to legally reverse the tax: “There is a formal agreement or we will oppose our scope,” warned Idoia Sagastizabal, who had already warned of the risk that the taxes would be challenged and eventually collected amounts would have to be returned.

For EH Bildu, its spokesman Mertxe Aizpurua has lamented that these taxes are “not enough” as they try to collect “very little” in these sectors.

For example, in the case of energy companies, they are looking for 2,000 million in two years, while they made 11,000 million in six months, and 1,500 million in banking over two years, when they made more than 20,000 million in profits in 2021. “And without forgetting the 60,000 million ransom,” he added.

Among the groups opposing the new taxes, the “popular” Mario Garcés has despised the proposal, calling it a “legal monstrosity”; has described as “fraud” that PSOE and United We Can try to present it as a patrimonial advantage — “this is a tribute” — and has spoken of “subjective persecution” of the affected sectors and of “collectivization”.
