Drama from Rhodes – Turkey: Six dead after Greek pushback

Date:

The Turkish coastguard claims to have rescued 73 migrants in the Mediterranean, who were allegedly driven back by Greek authorities. Six people – including two babies and three children – were found dead. Five people are still missing, it said Tuesday.

According to Turkish state news channel TRT, the migrants traveled from Lebanon to Italy in a 15-meter wooden boat. When the fuel ran out, they asked the Greek coastguard for the island of Rhodes for help.

Accusation: Greeks allegedly put migrants on life rafts
Instead, Greek authorities put the migrants on four life rafts and then dropped them off near Turkish coastal waters. The incident happened Tuesday evening.

Dauerthema Pushbacks
Greece has been repeatedly accused of so-called pushbacks – ie illegally pushing back migrants – to Turkey. The government in Athens regularly denies the allegations.

The Greek side has not yet provided any information about the current incident.
